Alphabet's third-quarter results include sales growing 25% to $128 billion. The firm's operating margins expanded 130 basis points to 31.8%. Google Cloud sales grew 103% to $31 billion, and now constitute 24% of the firm's top line, up from 15% a year ago.
Alphabet’s core advertising business is deeply entrenched in advertising budgets, allowing the firm to benefit from a secular increase in digital advertising spending.
Bears
While Alphabet is seeking to diversify its business away from search, text-based advertising remains the largest contributor to the firm’s top line, creating a concentration risk.
Alphabet is a holding company that wholly owns internet giant Google. The California-based company derives slightly more than three-fourths of its revenue from Google services, the vast majority of which is advertising sales. Alongside online ads, Google services houses sales stemming from Google’s subscription services (YouTube TV and YouTube Music, among others), platforms (sales and in-app purchases on Play Store), and devices (Chromebooks, Pixel smartphones, and smart home products such as Chromecast). Google’s cloud computing platform accounts for more than 20% of Alphabet’s revenue. The firm’s investments in up-and-coming technologies such as self-driving cars (Waymo) and health (Isomorphic) make up the rest.
