Domestic Scale and Sourcing Expertise Anchor Dollarama’s Narrow Moat Despite Competitive Angst

Dollarama’s strategy centers on pairing a curated assortment with low fixed price points and an efficient sourcing model, allowing it to profitably serve value-seeking consumers despite selling inexpensive merchandise. Its roughly 5,000 stock-keeping-units concentrate purchasing volumes alongside a largely shelf-stable assortment and dense store network, supporting attractive operating margins well above its grocery peers (roughly 20% higher), while keeping operating complexity low.

Bulls Say, Bears Say

Bulls

Successful replication of Dollarama’s sourcing and merchandising model in Australia could lift operating margins and returns faster than we forecast as the network scales toward 700 stores (from 400 in fiscal 2026).

Bears

Digitally native rivals such as Amazon and Temu could erode wallet share in discretionary general merchandise and seasonal aisles, pressuring traffic and merchandise margins.
