Weekly Market Update: Stocks Gain 1.03% as Utilities Rise, Industrials Fall
Zscaler and Moderna are among the week’s top-performing stocks.

Stock Market Update for the Trading Week Ended Oct. 9
- The Morningstar US Total Market Index rose 1.03%.
- The best-performing sectors were utilities, up 3.92%, and consumer defensives, up 3.89%.
- The worst-performing sectors were industrials, down 0.87%, and technology, down 0.13%.
- Large-cap stocks gained 1.17%, mid-cap stocks rose 1.95%, and small-cap stocks rose 0.19%.
- Growth stocks gained 0.94%, blend stocks gained 1.07%, and value stocks rose 1.15%.
- The S&P 500 gained 1.15%, and the Nasdaq rose 0.64%.
- Of the 870 US-listed companies covered by Morningstar, 565, or 65%, were up, two were unchanged, and 302, or 35%, were down.
Bonds and Commodities
- Yields on 10-year US Treasury notes fell to 5.24% from 5.28%.
- Yields on 2-year US Treasury notes fell to 4.80% from 4.83%.
- West Texas Intermediate crude prices rose 0.37% to $91.60 per barrel.
- Comex Gold prices rose 1.15% to $4,191.40.
Top Stock Gainers
PTC PTC, Nu Holdings NU, Crown Castle CCI, Zscaler ZS, and Moderna MRNA were the top performers among US-listed stocks covered by Morningstar analysts.
- PTC topped the list, rising 35.02%, and it’s up 58.01% over the past three months. This wide-moat company with a 3-star rating has decreased 4.77% over the past 12 months. The stock closed the week at $194.45, trading near its fair value estimate of $190.00 per share.
- Nu Holdings was the second-best performer, with a weekly return of 20.07%. The 3-star stock has gained 15.03% over the last three months. Shares in this narrow-moat company are down 0.52% over the past 12 months. Nu Holdings stock wrapped up the week at $16.12, trading at a 7% discount to its fair value estimate of $16.60 per share.
- Crown Castle ranked third for the week, rising 19.85%. The 5-star, narrow-moat stock has fallen 9.03% over the last three months and 24.14% over the past 12 months. Crown Castle stock closed at $79.64, trading at a 39% discount to its fair value estimate of $113.00 per share.
- The fourth-best-performing stock was narrow-moat Zscaler, which gained 18.89%. The 3-star stock has gained 51.03% over the last three months but is down 30.93% over the past 12 months. Zscaler finished the week at $233.73, trading at a 13% discount to its fair value estimate of $250.00 per share.
- Moderna climbed 18.42% in the latest week. This no-moat company has seen an increase of 166.94% over the last three months and a rise of 605.59% over the past 12 months. The 3-star stock ended the week at $225.0 per share, trading at a 21% premium to its fair value estimate of $163.

- IREN was the worst-performing stock of the week, falling 15.68%. This 3-star, no-moat company has fallen 16.96% over the past three months and 40.57% over the past 12 months. The stock ended the week at $35.21, trading at a 17% discount to its fair value estimate of $43.00 per share.
- CNH took the second spot, with a 15.41% price decline this week. The narrow-moat company, rated 5 stars, has risen 18.11% over the past three months and 14.51% over the past 12 months. Closing at $11.39, the stock trades at a 42% discount to its fair value estimate of $21.00 per share.
