Company Report

Campbell's Prudent Pursuit of Efficiencies Should Allow for Continued Brand Spending

Over the past 10 years, Campbell's has orchestrated significant changes. For one, the portfolio mix has shifted significantly: Its core soup lineup now accounts for just over 25% of total sales (down from more than 40% in fiscal 2017), while snacks account for just over 40% (up from less than 30%). In addition, the firm has worked to drive efficiencies across its supply chain and manufacturing network to boost spending behind its brands and capabilities, thereby solidifying its competitive edge. The byproduct of these efforts has been 1% average annual organic sales growth over the past five years alongside low-teens average adjusted operating margins.

Bulls Say, Bears Say

Bulls

Removing excess costs should afford Campbell's the fuel to reinvest in its brands, about a dozen of which, generate more than $100 million in sales each year.

Bears

Another step-up in labor, logistics, packaging, and raw material costs (which could be exacerbated by tariffs and the conflict in the Middle East) may dent Campbell's ability to drive meaningful margin gains.

Company Profile

Over the past 150-plus years, Campbell's has evolved into a leading domestic packaged food manufacturer, with a portfolio that extends beyond its iconic red-and-white labeled canned soup. In fiscal 2025 (July year-end), snacks accounted for 43% of its revenue, followed by soup (27%), other simple meals (23%), and beverages (7%). Beyond its namesake, its brands include Pepperidge Farm, Goldfish, Snyder’s of Hanover, Swanson, Pacific Foods, Prego, Pace, V8, and, most recently, Rao’s (a deal that closed in 2024). Around 90% of its revenue results from the US and the remainder from Canada and Latin America.
