The Week Ahead: What to Watch in Nike, FedEx Results
Jeremy Glaser: Ahead of the holidays, we’re looking forward to a smattering of earnings releases and data.
Nike has been facing some headwinds in North America recently, but international and direct to consumer sales have helped pick up the slack. Analyst John Brick thinks the firm's strong brand will help reinvigorate North American growth and boost margins. The firm reports on Thursday.
Olive Garden parent Darden has been outpacing the rest of the casual dining industry recently as management retools the business. We'll see if that momentum continues on Tuesday.
Also reporting on Tuesday is FedEx. One of the big questions surrounding the shipper is what impact Amazon's continued push into fulfillment will have long term. Morningstar's Keith Schoonmaker thinks it is possible Amazon will take some volume but doesn't expect it to have a major impact.
Other earnings include Bed, Bath & Beyond, Blackberry, and General Mills.
Personal consumption data on Friday will be closely watched for a window in to the state of the consumer along with an update on inflation. Housing data, including starts and permits, plus existing and new home sales are due during the week. We're also be looking for the third estimate of third-quarter GDP, durable goods orders, and the University of Michigan consumer sentiment reading.
