We Upgraded These 3 Funds
Big upgrades for T. Rowe Price and Pimco funds.
Russel Kinnel: It’s not easy for a fund to get a rating upgrade. We need to see significant fundamental improvement, and fees have to be pretty cheap for it to get upgraded. Let’s look at three funds we upgraded this year.
Dodge & Cox rarely tries something new, so when they do, we’re interested to see how it works. The firm is known for its deep fundamental research driving value strategies in both stocks and bonds. But for emerging markets, they thought they needed greater breadth than their analysts could produce. So they added a quantitative element to have a more diversified portfolio. Four years in, we’re ready to declare that effort a success.
We Upgraded These 3 Funds
We raised our rating on Dodge & Cox Emerging Markets’ Process from Average to Above Average, taking the fund’s overall rating to Silver from Bronze. The quant strategy adds about 200 names to the 15-25-stock portfolio built by the qualitative analyst side. The quant names have added value while taking risk down a notch to levels still slightly above the category norm. So far, risk-adjusted returns have been strong.
Meanwhile, we raised T. Rowe Price Value’s People and Process ratings from Average to Above Average. That raised the fund’s rating from Neutral to Silver. Manager Ryan Hedrick has dialed back the turnover at the fund and really focused on consistent performance in a straightforward value style. So far, he has succeeded admirably, and we’ve raised expectations accordingly.
Finally, we boosted Pimco Total Return’s Process rating from Above Average to High, and that took the largest share class of the fund back to Gold. Manager Mohit Mittal has sought to bring the fund back to its roots as a fairly bold core-plus strategy, using many of the levers available at the bond giant. Mittal has used or will use tactics such as currency carry, curve trades, and other macro positioning. The fund is working on its third year of modest outperformance, so it would seem to be working. This is actually one of the larger positions in my portfolio.
