What We Thought of Marathon Petroleum’s Earnings
Marathon Petroleum’s MPC fourth-quarter results blew past market expectations as strong refining operations, including a 114% capture rate, allowed the company to capitalize on an unseasonably strong margin environment. Marathon repurchased $1 billion of shares during the quarter.
Why it matters: The quarter shows that Marathon still has gas in the tank for its commercialization and operational improvement efforts, which have been ongoing for years. Full-year capture of 105% was impressive as well, and shows the quarter was not a one-off.
- A utilization rate of 95% in the fourth quarter further enabled Marathon to capitalize on elevated refining margins of $18.65 per barrel, driving refining and marketing adjusted EBITDA to $2 billion from $559 million a year earlier.
- Total shareholder distributions amounted to $4.5 billion in 2025. With expected capital spending reduced to $1.5 billion in 2026 from $1.65 billion the prior year, both dividends and investment needs are set to be fully covered by MPLX distributions, positioning Marathon to continue its capital return strategy if crack spreads remain supportive.
The bottom line: We confirm our $163 fair value estimate for Marathon, leaving the shares modestly overvalued. Our narrow moat rating is unchanged.
- Management conveyed the same constructive outlook as other refiners’ management teams, highlighting a supportive supply/demand imbalance expected to persist into 2026. While we agree with this near-term assessment, we continue to anchor our valuation to a midcycle-type margin, suggesting that the market is pricing above-midcycle conditions for longer.
