Company Report

Axon's Granular Relationships With Nearly All 18,000 US Police Departments Is Hard to Replicate

Axon’s suite of hardware and software plays a critical role in the technological backbone of modern law enforcement agencies. For decades, the Taser saw little commercial success, held down by immense legal pushback and regulatory barriers. Axon’s founder, Patrick Smith, improved upon the flawed technology and eventually brought the TASER to commercial success. Axon needed proof that TASERs weren’t the primary cause of death in most police encounters, so in 2009 it introduced the police body-worn camera and a cloud-hosted repository, Evidence.com, to record incidents and store untampered video and audio evidence.

Bulls Say, Bears Say

Bulls

Axon’s cross-selling and white space opportunities have respectively expanded with new product acquisitions and a focus on winning international and enterprise customers.

Bears

Axon remains GAAP-unprofitable partly because of its stock-based compensation. Equity awards will likely drag on profitability for years to come.

Company Profile

Axon was founded in 1993, but its roots trace back to the invention of the Taser in 1974 by Jack Cover. Over the decades, Axon has expanded its product suite to include police body-worn cameras, a cloud-based evidence repository, AI-driven report-drafting software, drones and counter-drone sensors, and 911 dispatching software. The firm sells its products to end markets such as local and federal law enforcement, enterprise, corrections, and healthcare. It derives around four-fifths of its revenue from the US, with the remainder from international countries.
