Morningstar Editorial Generative Artificial Intelligence Policy

A look at how we approach AI in content creation and when we disclose its use.

Morningstar’s editorial strategy is rooted in practical analysis created and delivered by skilled analysts and highly experienced investing specialists, editors, and other contributors. Differentiated commentary is one of our key strengths.

We believe the financial insights shared by our authors’ unique and diverse voices better engage and inform readers than does copy generated by predictive large language models, which can only distill existing information to an average. While these models output content by looking backward at what already exists, our strength lies in developing discerning editorial content that’s new and forward-looking.

Our editorial strategy highlights the value of individual human thought, with all its uniqueness, real-world experience, and independent insight.

While generative AI has its place in our editorial process, it is not used to generate the words and phrases that people read or hear in our editorial content. If AI has been used in the creation of our content, it will be disclosed through a co-byline and disclosure.

AI Uses

Morningstar Editorial may use AI as a tool for ideas, headline suggestions, metadata, and closed captions without noting its use. Articles translated with the assistance of AI tools may not be reviewed by a fluent speaker of the translated language, and accuracy cannot be guaranteed. Translated articles are provided for informational purposes only. In cases of discrepancy, the original-language article will prevail.

We expect our editorial AI policy to evolve along with the technology and its capabilities.

We don’t publish AI-assisted editorial content without human editorial oversight. Any editorial content generated by AI will be clearly labeled in the byline and carry a disclosure. All generative AI use for editorial content requires human review. Human review means that the author of the AI-assisted piece has:

  • verified facts using reliable sources
  • assessed the accuracy, context, and nuance of gen-AI developed analysis and conclusions
  • checked for plagiarism and copyright concerns
  • identified and addressed biases
  • ensured that the content meets editorial standards
  • included the necessary AI disclosures

The human author remains accountable for the final content.
