In its first meeting of 2022, the Federal Open Market Committee unsurprisingly held the federal-funds rate at 0.0%-0.25%. While nobody expected a change in rates at this meeting, there was high anticipation for the committee to hint that rates would begin rising at the March meeting and on that point the committee delivered. There were also a few details regarding how the Fed expects to navigate reducing its balance sheet once its asset purchases wind down in early March, as the committee released some "principles" for how it will approach the issue without offering up concrete details on the amount of or specific timing for balance sheet reductions.
