Etsy Stock Update

Etsy ETSY is unwinding its pandemic-era strategy, marked by the 2025 sale of Reverb and the pending 2026 divestiture of Depop to eBay for $1.2 billion. Management contends this will enable it to refocus on the core artisan marketplace that connects roughly 87 million buyers with 6 million sellers.

The bottom line: We’ve lowered our fair value estimate for Etsy to $70 per share from $74, due to a more modest long-term view of the business. We also downgraded the firm’s moat to narrow from wide, but maintain our High Uncertainty and Standard Capital Allocation Ratings.

  • We lowered our revenue outlook to a 7.4% CAGR from 10.9%, reflecting the removal of non-core assets and constrained near-term discretionary spending. However, shedding these dilutive assets drives our more favorable EBIT margin forecast to 18.4% on average from 16.4%.
  • We’ve cut Etsy’s moat rating to narrow from wide to reflect the lack of extensibility in its network effect. The failure of its “House of Brands” strategy shows the platform is confined to its artisan niche, limiting our confidence in its ability to generate excess returns over a 20-year horizon.

Long view: Despite operating in highly discretionary categories, we believe Etsy’s differentiated, niche inventory insulates it from direct price competition with broader marketplace peers, such as Amazon and Walmart.

  • While the platform lacks switching costs, Etsy’s top-of-funnel traffic acts as a powerful retention tool. Artisans would face prohibitive customer acquisition costs to replicate this reach independently, supporting our forecast 350-basis-point increase in take rate (from 24%) by 2035.
  • We surmise capital expenditures will remain consistent with its five-year average of 1.5% of sales, being directed primarily toward software development to reinforce the core marketplace experience for buyers and sellers, investments we deem necessary to retain traffic.
