Global Investor Experience Study: Fees and Expenses

Morningstar launched the Global Investor Experience study in 2009 to encourage a dialogue about global best practices for mutual funds from the perspective of fund shareholders. We've produced the study every two years, with 2019 marking the sixth edition. This year we have introduced one new market to our study with the addition of Mexico.

Grant Kennaway is director of manager research for Morningstar Australasia Pty Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of Morningstar Inc. Kennaway takes overall leadership for Morningstar's global manager selection teams to deliver research output solutions for clients.

Prior to joining Morningstar in 2011, Kennaway spent 11 years at Australian research house Lonsec, where he served as a fund analyst, head of funds research, and ultimately as general manager/director. He started his career in fund management, working for global funds management businesses including HSBC and Goldman Sachs.

Kennaway holds a bachelor's degree in arts from the University of Melbourne and a master's degree in business administration from Deakin University. He also holds a diploma of financial planning from the Financial Planning Association and a post-graduate diploma in management from the University of Melbourne Business School.

Christina West is a director on the manager research services team for Morningstar Research Services LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Morningstar, Inc. In her wide-ranging role, she analyzes the manager research team's processes, products, and services and implements improvements designed to boost efficiency and improve investment outcomes for clients.

West returned to Morningstar in 2019 after spending a year at Broadridge consulting for mutual fund boards of directors. Prior to that, West had been at Morningstar for 13 years, most recently as an investment consultant. She previously held roles on the manager research, software, and data teams, creating or surfacing proprietary research and data for Morningstar’s products. Prior to beginning her Morningstar career in 2004, West worked in the back office at an independent broker/dealer, with an advisor group at Smith Barney, and as an analyst at Zacks Investment Research.

West holds a bachelor's degree in economics from the University of Chicago and a Master of Business Administration with concentrations in finance and strategic management from the University of Chicago’s Booth School of Business.
