Company Report

Centrica's Business Profile Is Improving Upon Savvy Investments

Centrica is the leading retail energy supplier in the UK, operating under the British Gas brand. It also has upstream and midstream operations, including oil and gas production in the North Sea and a 20% stake in EDF’s UK nuclear plants. Thanks to its upstream operations, Centrica was historically positively exposed to soaring commodity prices. Accordingly, the latter's decline drove a 90% collapse in adjusted EPS between 2013 and 2020, leading to the cancelation of the dividend in 2020. Conversely, the rebound of commodity prices, driven by the energy crisis, boosted profits in 2022 and 2023.

Bulls Say, Bears Say

Bulls

The useful life extension of Sizewell B with a 20-year contract for difference adds another stream of long-term recurring revenue. The extension of Heysham and Hartlepool nuclear plants will support earnings between 2028-30.

Bears

2025 Centrica Energy's EBITDA may mark a new baseline, as a structurally weaker condition, particularly if inverted summer–winter spreads persist. This casts doubt on the achievability of the group’s 2028 recovery targets.
