Memory Prices and AI Investment Hit Xiaomi's Profit in the Near Term

Investors in Xiaomi will be hoping the company can leverage its proven ability to manufacture and market good value-for-money smartphone hardware into a sticky software ecosystem that will allow the company to increase its margins and returns. It will also try to use its Internet of Things, or IoT, products to help build this ecosystem. During its IPO in 2018, the company committed to limiting its margins on hardware products (smartphones and IoT) to 5%, but in 2019, it started a premiumization strategy, helped by Huawei pulling out of the market, and has been increasing its mix of higher-end products ever since. We expect this pivot toward higher-end products to continue over the next four to five years as it helps revenue growth and increases gross margins.

Bulls Say, Bears Say

Bulls

With US rules preventing Huawei from sourcing semiconductors with US technology used in production, Xiaomi should benefit from Huawei curtailing smartphone production.

Bears

Xiaomi faces strong competition from the biggest Chinese internet companies in the high-margin internet services business.

Company Profile

Xiaomi is a technology company providing products and services, founded in early 2010, focusing mainly on smartphones, Internet of Things products, and related internet services. An early adopter of online smartphone sales, Xiaomi uses a customized Android operating system called HyperOS and has recently designed its own system-on-chip. As competition in its home Chinese smartphone market intensified and growth has slowed, it has expanded into other markets and has become the smartphone market leader in India, and is gaining market share in Europe. In 2025, from a country perspective, around 67% of its overall revenue was generated in mainland China, but this should reduce when it sells EVs overseas. The company was listed on the Hong Kong market at the beginning of July 2018.
