HelloCollege data shows widespread AI use in coursework, rising career anxiety and shifting views on majors and degrees
OAK BROOK, Ill., Oct. 21, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- HelloCollege today released findings from its 2026 College Student AI Survey, showing that AI is already shaping how college students learn, plan and think about their futures. The survey found that 66% of current college students are more concerned about their future career because of AI, 50% say AI has changed how they understand the use of a college degree and 82% use AI in their coursework.
The findings suggest students are not just experimenting with AI. They are incorporating it into everyday academic life while also weighing what it could mean for the long-term value of higher education. As AI becomes more common in the classroom, students are asking bigger questions about whether a degree will still deliver the career security and return on investment they expected.
That uncertainty is already influencing decision-making. More than 1 in 3 (37%) students say they are shifting their career plans around AI, showing AI is changing not only how students complete their work but also how they choose their path forward.
"AI is not some far-off thing for students," said Kevin Krebs, founder and CEO of HelloCollege. "It is already part of how they study, how they search for colleges and how they think about what comes after graduation. What this survey shows is that students see the value in AI, but they are also getting nervous about where they fit in. They are asking real questions about which majors still make sense, which careers feel safer and whether a college degree is going to give them the kind of return they expected in a job market that is changing fast."
Student sentiment in the survey reflects that uncertainty. Over half (58%) of college students believe AI is not a net good for society, with the biggest concerns being mass layoffs, difficulty telling truth from fiction, data privacy, learning loss and mass surveillance.
At the same time, students see potential upside, with 25% saying their biggest hope for AI is better work conditions through automation, followed by more free time and new fields of employment.
