HSS-trained orthopedic spine surgeon adds surgical capacity and minimally invasive expertise as more patients seek care at the Reston spine center.
RESTON, Va., Oct. 7, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- VSI Spine Solutions (formerly Virginia Spine Institute) announced that orthopedic spine surgeon Alexander Upfill-Brown, MD, MSc, has joined its nationally recognized surgical team. The addition expands VSI's surgical capacity to meet rising patient demand, giving patients faster access to comprehensive, spine surgeon-led care focused on personalized solutions and lasting results.

Dr. Upfill-Brown joins VSI after completing a spine surgery fellowship at Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) in New York, an elite institution consistently ranked the nation's top orthopedic hospital.

Dr. Upfill-Brown's clinical and research interests include minimally invasive and endoscopic spine surgery, robot-assisted navigation, cervical and lumbar disc replacement, minimally invasive spinal fusion, and adult spinal deformity. He has authored or co-authored nearly 100 research publications, including a large review of outcomes after biportal endoscopic spine surgery in the European Spine Journal and studies on navigation in spinal fusion in The Spine Journal.

Dr. Upfill-Brown earned his medical degree from the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and completed his orthopedic surgery residency at UCLA Medical Center. He holds a Master of Science from the University of Oxford and a Bachelor of Science in biology from Stanford University.
