Bayer Raises Earnings Outlook on Pharma Recovery

By Adria Calatayud

Bayer raised its full-year earnings guidance, citing a recovery in its pharmaceutical arm after strong demand for key drugs allowed the group to offset market pressures at its agricultural and consumer-health divisions.

The German group said Tuesday that it now expects full-year earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization to range from 9.8 billion to 10.3 billion euros ($10.96 billion-$11.52 billion), excluding the effect of currency changes. It had previously forecast a result between 9.6 billion and 10.1 billion euros.

The outlook upgrade was driven by expectations of higher profitability at Bayer's pharma division. Bayer said the division entered a new cycle with growth at the top and bottom lines driven by its Nubeqa prostate cancer drug and its Kerendia kidney medicine.

Overall, the group reported third-quarter sales of 10.05 billion euros, up 4.1% on year. Analysts expected quarterly sales of 9.93 billion euros, according to consensus estimates compiled by Vara Research.

The company reported a narrowed quarterly net loss of 672 million euros compared with a loss of 963 million euros, as it was hit by impairment charges and litigation expenses. Excluding exceptional items, Ebitda rose 6.9% to 1.615 billion euros.
