Thomson Reuters Quarterly Profit Falls After Year-Early Gain on Asset Sale

By Robb M. Stewart

Thomson Reuters logged a drop in earnings in the third quarter after a year-ago boost from an asset sale and as it was squeezed by higher amortization of software.

The Canadian news and information provider said its net earnings fell to $339 million, or 78 cents a share, from $423 million, or 94 cents, a year earlier. The result last year was boosted by the sale of the company's remaining minority interest in the Elite legal financial management business.

On an adjusted basis that strips out certain items, per-share earnings for the three months rose to 81 cents, missing the 83 cents analysts polled by FactSet forecast.

Revenue for the quarter increased 11% to $1.83 billion, just behind the $1.84 billion mean forecast, driven by growth in the company's Big 3 segments.

Revenue from Thomson Reuters legal professionals segment was up 9.3% at $788 million and revenue from its corporates business rose 11% to $544 million. Revenue from services for tax, audit and accounting professionals similarly advanced 11% to $276 million.

The Reuters news segments notched a 13% increase in revenue on last year to $232 million.

Thomson Reuters, which has been ramping up spending on artificial intelligence for its products, particularly those aimed at legal professionals, at the start of October closed on a deal to sell a 51% controlling stake in its global legal print business to KKR for roughly $500 million and a 49% interest in a joint venture it is forming with the investment firm.

With the sale the company said it is now expecting revenue growth of about 9.5% in 2026 and organic revenue to rise between 8.5% and 9%. Revenue from its Big 3 segments is still forecast to increase by 9.5% to 10% for the year.
