Safran Wins French Nuclear Deterrence Contracts
By Joe Stonor
French defense group Safran said it won a contract to build navigation systems for France's nuclear deterrence arsenal.
The company said Monday that its electronics and defense division would provide inertial navigation programs to a new fleet of submarines, missile units and fighter jets that make up France's nuclear capabilities.
The company didn't disclose the value of the contract.
Safran's hemispherical resonator gyroscope technology--a high-precision sensor--will be used across the French nuclear program, it said.
The sensor will be used in France's new generation of nuclear submarines, the country's M51 missiles and a new batch of Rafale jets, the company said.
The contract was awarded by France's Direction Generale de l'Armement, a procurement body within France's armed forces ministry. Safran has worked to support France's nuclear deterrent for more than 50 years.
Safran has invested 120 million euros ($133.9 million) so far this year in developing the sensor in France, with the aim of tripling output of the technology in France by 2032.
Shares in Paris-listed Safran are up 3.6% at 285.60 euros.
