NatWest Earnings Boosted by Higher Net Interest Income
By Michael Hennessey
NatWest Group reported higher third-quarter pretax profit, helped by increased income following the acquisition of Evelyn Partners and deposit margin expansion.
The British high-street bank said operating pretax profit climbed 1.9% on year to 2.23 billion pounds ($2.98 billion) for the third quarter. Analysts had expected operating pretax profit of 2.20 billion pounds, according to a company-compiled consensus.
The lender said total income increased to 4.64 billion pounds from 4.33 billion pounds, in line with the analysts' forecast.
Net interest income--the difference between what banks earn on loans and what they pay out on client deposits--grew 8.9% to 3.56 billion pounds, while the bank's net interest margin expanded to 2.50% from 2.37%.
Total customer assets and liabilities climbed 1.6% in the quarter to just over 1 trillion pounds.
Return on tangible equity--a key profitability metric--fell to 21.6% in the third quarter from 22.3% a year ago.
NatWest maintained its guidance from its half-year results. The bank expects total income excluding notable items of around 17.9 billion pounds for the year, with a return on tangible equity greater than 19%.
