China Vows to Defend Interests After U.S. Adds Genomics Firms to Blacklist
China's commerce ministry on Thursday condemned U.S. import restrictions on three Chinese genomics companies and vowed to take necessary measures to defend the country's interests.
The U.S. on Wednesday added BGI Genomics, MGI Tech and Shenzhen BGI Technology to its Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act Entity List, citing alleged links to forced labor in Xinjiang. The move requires importers to prove that goods from the companies weren't made with forced labor before they can enter the U.S. market.
China has repeatedly denied allegations of forced labor in Xinjiang. The commerce ministry said workers of all ethnic groups in the region enjoy freedom and equal employment opportunities, and that their labor rights are effectively protected by law.
The ministry accused Washington of using human rights as a pretext for unilateral protectionism and bullying, saying the latest restrictions came despite China's previous objections to U.S. sanctions targeting Chinese entities over Xinjiang. It said the measures violated the consensus reached by the two countries' leaders and seriously undermined the stability of bilateral economic and trade relations.
The ministry urged Washington to stop what it called political manipulation and attacks on Chinese companies.
