New Home Sales Edged Lower in September

The rate of new home sales declined in September, though not as much as expected. Here are the main takeaways from the report released by the Census Bureau and the Department of Housing and Urban Development:

--Sales of new single-family homes fell to 676,000 in September, down less than 1% from 680,000 in August.

--A consensus of economists polled by The Wall Street Journal expected 653,000 new sales in September, or a 4.5% decrease.

--The estimate for new houses for sale was 476,000 in September, a 1% drop from the August estimate of 481,000, the Commerce Department said.

--The median sales price of new houses sold in September was $400,400, above the August price of $385,400.
