Canada Inflation Accelerates to 3.1% in September
By Robb M. Stewart
OTTAWA--Canada's annual inflation rate heated up slightly in September as oil prices rose to the highest since May, driving up energy costs.
The country's consumer price index rose 0.1 percentage point to 3.1% from a year earlier, Statistics Canada said Monday.
Economists were expecting inflation to accelerate to 3.2%, after it held steady in August at the top end of the 1% to 3% window the Bank of Canada aims for.
Excluding gasoline, the consumer price index climbed 2.2% in September following a 2.4% rise in August.
On a month-over-month basis, prices rose 0.1%, slightly softer than expectations for a 0.2% advance. On a seasonally adjusted basis, the consumer price index increased 0.4% from the previous month.
The Bank of Canada's preferred trimmed mean and weighted median measures of underlying inflation averaged eased modestly to 1.85% on-year, the slowest pace in six years, after holding steady at 1.95% in August.
