Financials Up After Generally Strong Earnings — Financials Roundup

Shares of banks and other financial institutions rose slightly.

One strategist said global markets were testing key technical levels but could soon regain their footing.

"When you get the VIX, hanging around 20 and crude stays below $100, I think cooler heads can prevail after the weekend," said JJ Kinahan, senior vice president at exchange firm CBOE Global Markets.

Property-and-casualty insurer Travelers reported higher quarterly profit, despite roughly flat revenue, helped by investment gains.

Regions Financial shares were more or less flat after it posted third-quarter earnings and revenue growth, continuing a strong streak for regional banks.

Rising interest rates can bolster bank profits, though risks to loan demand mean that recent Treasury-market moves are a double-edged sword for the sector.

M&T Bank reported lower third-quarter profit as higher expenses more than offset an increase in net interest income.

Truist Financial has agreed to sell $7.7 billion of unsecured consumer loans to Carlyle Group.
