Berkshire Hathaway Builds 4% Stake in Bending Spoons — Update

By Colin Kellaher

Shares of Bending Spoons took flight Wednesday on news that Berkshire Hathaway has built a 4% stake in the serial acquirer of digital-subscription and software companies.

Bending Spoons said Berkshire has made a fresh investment of $330 million in the Milan-based company after plowing $600 million into its initial public offering in July.

Bending Spoons shares shot up 44% to $54.45 in early trading Wednesday even though Berkshire's latest investment came at a steep discount.

The company said it is selling 10 million shares at $33 apiece to Berkshire in a private placement, nearly 13% below Tuesday's closing price of $37.86.

Bending Spoons, which has spent the past few years rolling up fading tech companies like AOL, Evernote and Vimeo, said it plans to use the fresh funds from Berkshire to pursue additional acquisitions.

Greg Abel, who took the helm at Berkshire Hathaway at the start of the year from legendary investor Warren Buffett, has been reshaping the Omaha, Neb., conglomerate's massive investment portfolio, most notable through the addition of $17 billion worth of shares in Google parent Alphabet in the second quarter.
