Consumer Cos Down After LVMH Earnings - Consumer Roundup

Consumer companies fell after a surprisingly weak report from luxury conglomerate LVMH.

The French owner of Louis Vuitton, Dior, Tiffany and other high-end brands said sales growth slowed in the latest quarter.

Rivals such as Gucci owner Kering fell in sympathy. In the U.S., however, there are still signs of a "k-shaped" economy as wealthier consumers consistently exhibit more appetite for spending in consumer surveys.

"[In] the consumer, there's some unevenness between the upper end lower end, between the haves versus have-nots," said J.D. Joyce, president of Houston financial advisory Joyce Wealth Management. "It's probably some of the inflation one would assume is going to be hurting the lower income families to a greater degree having to cover these necessities."

Chipotle shares fell after Starbucks scotched rumors that it was considering buying the burrito chain.

Delta is pushing back plans to launch nonstop service between Atlanta and Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, after several fatal strikes at the city's airport.

Grocery store chain Albertsons is seeking at least $8 billion in restitution from rival Kroger tied to the collapse of a merger deal.
