NHTSA Considers Probe of Tesla Robotaxis Over Alleged Speeding in School Zones

By Kelly Cloonan

Regulators received a petition requesting an investigation into certain Tesla robotaxis alleging the models' automated driving system exceeds posted speed limits in active school zones.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said it would evaluate the allegations and determine whether to grant or deny the petition to open a formal investigation.

The defect petition involves Tesla's Model Y and Cybercab from model year 2026. Along with the request, the petitioner provided three links to video footage as supporting evidence, according to the NHTSA.
