ICE Review: Canola Posts Small Gains After Choppy Day

WINNIPEG, Manitoba--The ICE Futures canola market settled with small gains on Friday after trading to both sides of unchanged in choppy activity.

--November canola was up by C$0.80 at C$816.70 per ton, having traded in a 10 dollar range from C$813.40 to C$823.50 per ton.

--Updated supply/demand estimates from the United States Department of Agriculture initially sparked a bearish reaction in the soy complex, as upward revisions to production and ending stocks estimates topped expectations. However, speculative short-covering came forward to underpin the Chicago futures, with some of that technical buying spilling into the canola market.

--Positioning ahead of the Thanksgiving long weekend was another feature, as Canadian markets will be closed on Monday for the holiday.

--Seasonal harvest pressure tempered the advances, as the canola harvest nears its final stages across most of the Prairies.

--Canada exported 248,400 tons of canola during the week ended Oct. 4, which was up from 130,700 tons the previous week, reported the Canadian Grain Commission.

--There were 87,700 contracts traded on Friday, which compares with Thursday when 97,978 contracts changed hands.

Spreading accounted for 65,486 of the contracts traded.
