Shares of energy companies rose amid deal activity.
Oil and natural-gas pipeline operator Energy Transfer agreed to buy Dallas rival Vaquero Midstream for about $2.63 billion in cash and stock. Shares of other pipeline firms such as Williams Cos and Kinder Morgan Partners rose in sympathy.
Oil futures ticked up 1 cent, or 0.01%, to $89.44 a barrel.
