AT&T Forms JV With GIP, CPP Investments to Accelerate Fiber Expansion

By Connor Hart

AT&T is teaming up with BlackRock-owned Global Infrastructure Partners and Canada Pension Plan Investment Board to bring fiber to more homes across the U.S.

The companies on Tuesday said they agreed to form a joint venture that will operate as a commercial, open-access wholesale fiber provider.

The JV will include Forged Fiber 37--a wholesale fiber network platform provider consisting primarily of operations that AT&T acquired from Lumen Technologies' mass markets fiber business--as well as AT&T's existing wholesale fiber joint venture with Global Infrastructure Partners.

Investments made by AT&T, Global Infrastructure Partners and CPP Investments will help accelerate the delivery of critical infrastructure needed to meet growing demand for high-performance, advanced connectivity, the companies said.

"Fiber is the definitive connectivity technology for an AI-driven world," AT&T Chief Executive John Stankey said. "This JV will bring the unmatched benefits of high-speed, reliable fiber connectivity to more Americans."

Under the agreement, AT&T will hold a 50% ownership stake in the JV. Global Infrastructure Partners and CPP Investments will collectively own the remaining 50% stake.
