Google, Constellation Energy Team Up to Bring Nuclear Power to PJM Power Grid

By Connor Hart

Alphabet's Google and Constellation Energy are partnering to bring 890 megawatts of nuclear capacity to the PJM power grid, helping to meet growing demand,

The 20-year power purchase agreement will enable investments in equipment and technology at 11 Constellation-owned nuclear units in Illinois, Pennsylvania and New Jersey, increasing thermal and electrical efficiency to unlock additional power to serve the PJM power grid, the companies said Tuesday.

The capacity is entirely new and will expand the total electricity generation capacity across the PJM power market, which coordinates the movement of wholesale electricity in 13 states, largely concentrated in the mid-Atlantic region.

Google and Constellation said the agreement is projected to sustain roughly 4,400 existing jobs, as well as create about 7,200 construction jobs during the building period. The deal represents more than $4.3 billion of new investment by Constellation.

In addition to expanding nuclear capacity, Google and Constellation entered into a 15-year energy supply agreement for an additional 2,700 megawatts in PJM's fleet, ensuring Constellation's operating generation assets continue to deliver energy and capacity to the PJM market.

Constellation also selected Google Cloud and Gemini Enterprise under an expanded five-year technology alliance, establishing what the company called an "AI for energy" blueprint to accelerate capacity delivery, optimize asset dispatch and protect critical infrastructure.
