Spain's Prime Minister Sanchez Calls Snap Elections
By Joshua Kirby
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez called fresh parliamentary elections for next month, a move that could bring about the end of his eight-year tenure as leader of the country.
The socialist leader said Monday that he would dissolve congress, with elections for the Spanish lower house to be held on Nov. 29. Polls suggest the conservative opposition party would win most votes in an election and could command a parliamentary majority alongside the far-right Vox party.
Sanchez's move comes after a key piece of housing legislation was rejected by lawmakers on Friday, demonstrating the fragility of his mandate. Sanchez began a new term as head of the eurozone's fourth-largest economy in 2023 but lacks a parliamentary majority.
"We want to bring about a much larger progressive majority in parliament," he said in a televised speech.
