Industrial Shares Rise Amid Robust U.S. Indicators — Industrials Roundup

Shares of industrial and transportation companies rose on another round of strong economic data.

Factory activity expanded in the U.S. in September for the ninth consecutive month, buoying shares in the industrial sector.

The Institute for Supply Management's purchasing managers' index was 54.5 in September, compared with 54.6 in August. Readings above 50 indicate a sectoral expansion. Analysts polled by The Wall Street Journal were expecting a reading of 54.9.

General Motors reported a decline in third-quarter sales, as discontinued models and a diminished market for electric vehicles weighed on the company's performance.

Boeing engineers hold significant leverage in a contract showdown with management. Stung by a mechanics strike in 2024, the plane maker is trying to avoid a new work stoppage with its engineers and technicians. The union that represents the company's aerospace engineers and technicians is months into its first full contract talks in 14 years.
