Central U.S. Factory Activity Maintained Momentum into September — Kansas City Fed
By Dean Seal
Manufacturing activity in the central U.S. accelerated in September, coming close to its pace from June, a monthly survey said Thursday.
The Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City said its Tenth District Manufacturing Survey's composite index came in at 14 in September, up from a reading of 10 in August and 9 in July, stretching toward its 11 reading from June.
Readings above zero indicate expansion, while those below zero indicate contraction. Economists polled by The Wall Street Journal had been expecting a step back to 9.
Both durable and nondurable manufacturing growth increased, largely from plastics, rubber products and furniture-related products dialing up.
Every month-over-month index was positive, and the average employee workweek index rose modestly. Expectations for future activity remain expansionary, according to the survey.
The manufacturing survey covers activity in the Tenth District, which includes Colorado, Oklahoma, Wyoming, Nebraska, Kansas, the northern half of New Mexico and the western third of Missouri.
