Warren Buffett Yields Berkshire Hathaway Chairman Post to Son Howard — Update

By Colin Kellaher

Warren Buffett has stepped aside as chairman of Berkshire Hathaway, with his son Howard taking up the post.

Berkshire on Friday said the billionaire investor, who retired as chief executive of the massive conglomerate at the end of 2025, will now serve as chairman emeritus of the Omaha, Neb., company and remain a member of the board.

Buffett, who recently turned 96, said Greg Abel's performance as CEO since taking the helm at the start of this year, helped influence the timing of the move.

"My expectations for him were sky high from the start, and he has exceeded them," Buffett said in a letter to Berkshire shareholders, adding that "the timing is right to complete the transition."

Howard Buffett has been a Berkshire director since 1993, which Warren Buffett noted is a "longer apprenticeship than I served before taking the reins at the age of 34."

Berkshire said Susan Decker, a board member since 2007, will continue to serve as lead independent director.

"Father Time always wins," Warren Buffett said. "He has, however, been generous with me. He has given me the opportunity to see Berkshire reach a point where I am more confident than ever about what lies ahead."
