Shares of energy companies rose alongside oil futures as a conflict in the Middle East escalated.
Refiners such as Marathon Petroleum and Valero, which are benefitting from a rising "crack spread" between oil prices and refined products, hit all-time highs.
There was a multibillion dollar deal in the Canadian oil patch. Tamarack Valley agreed to acquire Headwater Exploration in a 10 billion Canadian dollars ($7.24 billion) all-stock deal, uniting two major heavy-oil producers in Alberta.
