Canada Goods-Trade Surplus Narrows to C$769 Million

By Robb M. Stewart

OTTAWA--Canada's merchandise-trade surplus with the rest of the world narrowed sharply in July as exports declined for the first time in six months, led by a drop in shipments of gold and energy products.

The country posted a goods-trade surplus of 769 million Canadian dollars, the equivalent of about US$555.5 million, Statistics Canada said Thursday. This marked a fifth consecutive monthly surplus.

Economists were expecting a positive balance of C$3.25 billion, following June's upwardly revised C$4.2 billion surplus, the widest in four years.

After hitting a record high in June, exports fell 2.3% to C$76.14 billion in the latest month, while imports rose 2.2% to an all-time high C$75.37 billion, Statistics Canada said.

Exports to the U.S., Canada's biggest market by a wide margin, declined 6.6%, while imports were up 1.8%. That narrowed Canada's longstanding surplus with its neighbor to C$5.91 billion in July from C$10.28 billion the month before.
