Trump Wants More Ranchers in the Meatpacking Business

By Patrick Thomas

After angering cattlemen over a plan to increase beef imports, President Trump said on social media Friday that he's going to help ranchers process the meat themselves.

In a Truth Social post, Trump called the nation's top four beef processors -- Tyson Foods, JBS, Cargill and National Beef -- a "nasty monopoly." Earlier this week, Trump said on "The Glenn Beck Program" that he will look into whether regulations are too burdensome on small processing plants.

Shares in JBS were down more than 1% in morning trading. Tyson shares dipped premarket, but recently traded up a half percent.

Some cattle groups and politicians have called for an amendment to federal meat inspection rules to allow processors to sell meat to in-state retailers without USDA inspections. Meat industry opponents say this would jeopardize food safety and undermine consumer confidence in all meat products.
