Rheinmetall, MBDA Get Laser-Weapon Contract Worth Hundreds of Millions of Dollars

By Joshua Kirby

Rheinmetall said it jointly won a laser-weapon contract from the German military with a value in the hundreds of millions of euros.

The German arms maker said Thursday that the High-Energy Laser Naval Demonstrator Working Group, the joint venture it is forming with missile-systems manufacturer MBDA Deutschland, was awarded the contract to develop a laser-weapon system for the German navy. The system is designed to be operational by 2029, Rheinmetall said.

Development will "cover the entire operational chain from reconnaissance and target tracking to engagement," the company said.
