Costco Reports Rising June Sales
By Elias Schisgall
Costco Wholesale reported a 10.6% jump in U.S. sales in the retail month of June, helped by a sharp increase in gas prices from the prior year.
The warehouse retailer on Wednesday reported sales for the five weeks ended July 5 of $29.24 billion, up from $26.44 billion a year earlier.
Comparable sales were up 8.8% across the whole company, Costco said. That includes a 3.7% growth in Canada, as well as a 4.7% increase in international markets. Digitally enabled sales were up 21%.
The company's numbers were buoyed by high gas prices, which have been elevated since the start of the war in Iran. Gas inflation had a roughly 2.5% positive impact on overall comparable sales, the company said, with average worldwide selling prices per gallon up 22% year over year.
Stripping out the impacts of gas prices and foreign exchange rates, comparable sales grew 7% in June, including a 7.6% rise in the U.S. and a 4.9% increase in Canada.
Shares in Costco fell 1.5% to $939.34 in after-hours trading on Wednesday. The stock closed up 0.6% at $953.13, up 11% this year.
