Spain's Sanchez Says Relations With U.S. Are 'Very Positive' Despite Trump Comments
By Joshua Kirby
Spain's relationship with the U.S. is "very positive," Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said, following earlier criticism of the country by President Trump.
"Spain is a country that is always working to build stronger relations with its allies," Sanchez told reporters at a NATO summit in Ankara on Wednesday.
Sanchez's comments came after President Trump lashed out at the Iberian kingdom during a conversation with NATO chief Mark Rutte earlier in the day. The Spanish government this year refused to let the U.S. military use its bases or airspace for flights related to the Iran war, which Sanchez has criticized. Trump at the time said he would cut off trade with the eurozone's fourth-largest economy, a threat he reiterated Wednesday.
"We don't want to do any trade business with Spain anymore," Trump said. "I don't want anything to do with Spain. Cut off all trade with Spain, please."
Sanchez said he took the comments with "calm, patience, a certain normality." He noted that trade negotiations within the European Union can only take place at the level of the bloc's institutions.
Sanchez, meanwhile, underscored Spain's commitment to NATO, noting the deployment of Spanish troops in Eastern Europe in the face of what he called a threat from Russia.
