U.S. Corn Inspections Turn Lower, Soybeans Climb

By Kirk Maltais

Inspections of U.S. corn exports fell from both the prior week and month, while soybean inspections rose, according to data from the Department of Agriculture.

In its latest weekly Grain Export Inspections report, the USDA said that for the week ended June 11, inspections of corn totaled 1.64 million metric tons. That's down from 2.01 million tons the prior week, and also lower than 1.7 million tons at this time last year.

Meanwhile, soybean inspections were 522,687 tons for the week, which is higher than 412,122 tons at this time last week and 225,571 tons at this time last year. Wheat inspections totaled 334,292 tons for the week, which is higher than the previous week but less than what was reported at this time last year.

A peace deal between the U.S. and Iran may spark larger movements of U.S. grain shipments, thanks to the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. CBOT grain futures are higher in morning trade, with a lack of certainty about what a peace deal with Iran looks like spurring traders to re-apply risk premium that was taken off overnight last night.

Most-active CBOT corn is up 0.7%, while soybeans climb 0.4% and wheat is up 0.7%.
