FDA Issues Emergency Authorization for Screwworm Tablet

The Food and Drug Administration issued an emergency-use authorization for generic Nitenpyram tablets to treat new world screwworm in dogs and cats.
The issuance marks the first generic animal drug authorized for use against new world screwworm, the FDA said Thursday.
New world screwworm flies lay eggs in open wounds or mucous membranes of mammals. The larvae hatch within hours and burrow into the animal's flesh.
Nitenpyram tablets are sponsored by Felix Pharmaceuticals, which is based in Ireland.
Nitenpyram kills most larvae within hours of the first dose. The FDA said its research indicates that benefits of the tablet outweigh risks.
Pet owners are being asked to administer a second dose six hours after the first. Effects are short-acting, so the tablets don't prevent screwworm myiasis or protect against reinfestations, the regulator said.
Nitenpyram tablets are available over the counter and come in two dosing sizes, dependent on the cat or dog's weight.
