Lilly, Haisco Announce Tie-Up That May Be Worth Over $3 Billion
By Fabiana Negrin Ochoa and Colin Kellaher
Haisco Pharmaceutical Group has formed a licensing and research collaboration with Eli Lilly that is potentially worth more than $3 billion to the Chinese pharmaceutical company.
The Shenzhen-listed company will work with Lilly to develop innovative medicines across multiple therapeutic areas. Under the terms of the partnership announced Monday, Haisco will be eligible to receive up to $87 million in upfront and near-term payments, and as much as to $2.97 billion in downstream milestones, plus royalties on sales.
Haisco said in a statement that it will be responsible for the discovery and identification of up to five innovative target programs, while Lilly will lead studies, clinical development and commercialization.
The U.S. company will also get exclusive global rights to some of the programs, and exclusive rights outside mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan for others.
The collaboration is the first license and research deal struck between Lilly and Haisco, which specializes in small-molecule innovative drugs, biologics and high-end generics.
Earlier, Haisco announced that its cipepofol injection received marketing approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, making it the first China-originated innovative intravenous anesthetic to enter the global market.
It is now advancing commercialization in the U.S. and other regions through collaborations, and said it will consider starting a marketing authorization application for cipepofol in Europe.
