Southern Co Receives $26.54 Billion Energy-Infrastructure Loan Package from Department of Energy

By Adriano Marchese

Southern has received a loan package of up to $26.54 billion from the U.S. Department of Energy to finance a broad portfolio of energy-infrastructure projects across Alabama and Georgia.

The regulated electric and gas utility said the 30-year loan package will go to its subsidiaries, Georgia Power and Alabama Power. The funds are expected to go toward investments in power from natural gas, nuclear uprates and license extensions, hydropower and battery energy storage, as well as transmission system improvements and grid enhancements.

The funding is distributed by Department of Energy's Office of Energy Dominance Financing and is part of President Trump's Energy Dominance Financing Program.

For its roughly 4.3 million customers, Southern said they can expect to recognize estimated savings of $7 billion.
