Chinese Chip Maker OmniVision Integrated Circuits Group Shares Jump in Hong Kong Debut

By Jason Chau

Shares of Chinese chip maker OmniVision Integrated Circuits Group rose in its Hong Kong trading debut, the latest in a string of successful listings by Chinese AI and semiconductor firms in recent months.

OmniVision raised 4.80 billion Hong Kong dollars, equivalent to US$615.8 million, selling 45.8 million shares at HK$104.80 each. That puts its market capitalization at HK$170.30 billion, according to its exchange filing.

The stock rose over 15% from its offering price in early trade on Monday. Its Shanghai-listed shares were 0.7% higher.

The Shanghai-based company plans to use funds raised on research and development of key technologies such as its advanced sensing and display technology, global expansion and strategic investments and acquisitions, its filing showed.

The fabless semiconductor designer, which doesn't manufacture its own chips, primarily provides CMOS image sensors, which are chips that convert light into electrical signals and are widely used in smartphones, cars and cutting-edge technologies like smart glasses and Edge AI.

According to its listing documents, OmniVision was the world's third largest digital image sensor provider in 2024, citing data from market research firm Frost & Sullivan.

Founded as Will Semiconductor, the firm first went public in Shanghai in 2017. It acquired U.S.-based image sensor provider OmniVision Technologies in 2019, which cemented its market position globally in the CMOS image sensor segment alongside industry leaders Sony Group Corp. and Samsung Electronics.

The Hong Kong listing came as investors have poured billions into Chinese chip makers lately, amid Beijing's push to establish self-sufficiency in semiconductors against the backdrop of an escalating AI race between the U.S. and China.

Shares of chip makers Shanghai Biren and Moore Threads both surged on their recent trading debuts, while memory chips designer GigaDevice Semiconductor is set to debut in Hong Kong on Tuesday.
