IBM, Cisco to Build Network of Quantum Computers

IBM and Cisco will collaborate to build a network of large-scale, fault-tolerant quantum computers.

The companies said they expect to have an initial demonstration of the network within five years. The network will combine individual quantum computers, allowing them to work together to run computations over tens to hundreds of thousands of qubits.

Developing the network will require the companies to invent new hardware and software technologies to link quantum computers over longer distances.

The companies said the quantum network could eventually allow for a quantum computing internet, in which quantum-based technologies are connected and share information across distances, by the late 2030s.
