China's October New Yuan Loans Grew Less Than Expected

China's new yuan loans grew less than expected in October, continuing a trend of weak credit demand, according to official data released on Thursday.

Chinese banks issued 220 billion yuan, equivalent to $31 billion, in new loans in October, a sharp decline from 1.29 trillion yuan in September, data released by the People's Bank of China showed.

Economists surveyed by The Wall Street Journal had expected new yuan loans to total 440 billion yuan last month.

Total social financing, a broader measure that includes non-bank credit, amounted to 810 billion yuan in October, significantly lower than the 3.53 trillion yuan recorded in September.

M2, the broadest measure of the money supply, rose 8.2% year-on-year in October, slightly down from an 8.4% increase in September but higher than the 8.1% growth forecast by surveyed economists.
