JBS to Pay $1.1 Million to Settle False Advertising Claim About Environmental Commitment
By Katherine Hamilton
JBS's U.S. subsidiary will pay $1.1 million to settle with the New York Attorney General over allegedly misleading the public about its efforts to reduce its carbon footprint.
Attorney General Letitia James sued the meat producer in 2024. JBS was advertising it would reach net-zero greenhouse-gas emissions by 2040, but an investigation by James's office found the company had no plan to achieve that goal.
JBS USA's payment will go toward agriculture programs designed to help New York farmers reduce emissions and improve productivity, James's office said Monday. The company also agreed to reform its environmental-marketing practices and report annually to the Attorney General's office for three years.
James's office found that JBS hadn't yet calculated its total greenhouse-gas emissions or developed a plan to become net-zero when it announced its environmental commitment for 2040.
