Cigna Posts Higher 3Q Profit, Revenue as Evernorth Business Continues to Grow
By Connor Hart
Cigna Group logged higher profit and revenue in the third quarter, boosted by continued strength in its pharmacy-benefit business Evernorth.
The healthcare company on Thursday posted a profit of $1.87 billion, or $6.98 a share, for its three months ended Sept. 30, compared with $739 million, or $2.63 a share, a year earlier.
Stripping out certain one-time items, adjusted per-share earnings were $7.83, ahead of the $7.64 forecast by analysts, according to FactSet.
Revenue rose 9.5% to $69.75 billion. Wall Street had modeled $67.58 billion.
The Bloomfield, Conn., company attributed its higher top line largely to its Evernorth Health Services. Adjusted revenue in Evernorth--which includes pharmacy benefit services and specialty and care services--jumped 15%.
The gain was partially offset by an 18% decline in adjusted revenue in Cigna's namesake segment. Cigna Healthcare, which provides medical plans, included Medicare and related businesses until the company divested them in March.
For the year, Cigna backed its outlook for adjusted earnings of at least $29.60 a share.
